Zi Wei Dou Shu: What the Twelve Palaces Govern
The Twelve Palaces (Shi Er Gong) are the twelve fixed life areas on a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart: Life, Siblings, Spouse, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friends, Career, Property, Fortune and Parents. Each palace is a "topic"; the major stars inside it, their brightness grades (Temple, Prosperous, Advantageous, Even, Fallen) and the Four Transformations (Si Hua) describe roughly how that topic tends to operate. The reading order is: palace first, then the stars inside it, then its Three Directions and Four Positions (San Fang Si Zheng).

Plain-language definition
A Zi Wei Dou Shu chart is a set of twelve boxes. Each box carries two labels: an Earthly Branch (zi, chou, yin…), whose position is fixed; and a palace name, set from your birth month and hour. The palace name tells you what that box is about; the stars inside tell you roughly how that matter operates.
The order is fixed and runs all the way around starting from the Life Palace (Ming Gong): Life → Siblings → Spouse → Children → Wealth → Health → Travel → Friends → Career → Property → Fortune → Parents. Memorise that sequence once and you can orient yourself on any chart in seconds. You can generate your own chart with NPCC's chart tool and follow along.
The twelve palaces at a glance
| # | Palace | Mainly governs |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Life Palace (Ming Gong 命宮) | Core temperament, values, overall life tone and direction |
| 2 | Siblings (Xiong Di 兄弟宮) | In the San He school, mainly siblings and peers (some lineages also read the mother here); cash flow and financial backing are a Flying Stars school extension of how the Siblings Palace is used |
| 3 | Spouse (Fu Qi 夫妻宮) | Marriage and stable partnership, the type of partner you attract, how you relate |
| 4 | Children (Zi Nü 子女宮) | Children, students and juniors, creativity, sexuality, the starting stage of matters |
| 5 | Wealth (Cai Bo 財帛宮) | Earning style, spending habits, the rhythm of money coming in and going out |
| 6 | Health (Ji E 疾厄宮) | Constitution, stress responses, bodily tendencies (not a diagnosis) |
| 7 | Travel (Qian Yi 遷移宮) | Going out, movement, relocation, how the outside world sees and treats you |
| 8 | Friends (Jiao You 交友宮/Nu Pu 奴僕宮) | Friends, colleagues, subordinates, social networks |
| 9 | Career (Guan Lu 官祿宮) | Work, position, examinations and further study, professional performance |
| 10 | Property (Tian Zhai 田宅宮) | Home and dwelling, real estate, stored assets and environment |
| 11 | Fortune (Fu De 福德宮) | Inner world: emotions, thinking habits, enjoyment, interests and spiritual taste |
| 12 | Parents (Fu Mu 父母宮) | Parents and elders, bosses and authority, documents and official matters |
Two other common concepts: the Body Palace (Shen Gong 身宮) only falls in one of six palaces — Life, Spouse, Wealth, Travel, Career or Fortune — overlapping that palace and showing where the middle and later part of life gathers emphasis; and the empty palace (空宮, no major star) is very common, because the fourteen major stars are spread across twelve palaces, so empty palaces must occur. Almost every chart has one or several, and it is not a defect.
Where to see it on the chart
Palace names are usually printed at the bottom of each box, with the Earthly Branch in a corner. Suggested order:
- Find the Life Palace and note which branch it sits in.
- Read the major stars inside and their brightness grade (Temple 廟, Prosperous 旺, Advantageous 利, Even 平, Fallen 陷).
- Look at the Three Directions and Four Positions: the opposite palace plus the two trine palaces. For the Life Palace these are Travel, Wealth and Career.
- Mark where the birth-year Four Transformations (Lu 祿, Quan 權, Ke 科, Ji 忌) land.
The basic San He school principle: never judge a palace alone — any palace must be read together with its Three Directions and Four Positions.
A worked example, step by step
Suppose the Life Palace sits in yin (寅) with Lian Zhen (Chaste Purity) and Tian Xiang (Prime Minister) together (Lian Zhen with Tian Xiang in the same palace can only occur in yin and shen, with Po Jun opposite). Brightness: by the brightness table used here, both Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang are Temple (廟) in yin. Note that brightness standards differ slightly between schools (for example, Lian Zhen in zi and wu is Even 平 in most tables, but Fallen 陷 in the Zhong Zhou school and others), so no single table should be treated as the only standard.
Counting the fixed order from yin, the other palaces fall like this: Siblings in chou, Spouse in zi, Children in hai, Wealth in xu, Health in you, Travel in shen, Friends in wei, Career in wu, Property in si, Fortune in chen, Parents in mao.
Three Directions and Four Positions:
| Palace | Branch | Major stars | Brightness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Life | yin | Lian Zhen + Tian Xiang | Temple / Temple |
| Travel (opposite) | shen | Po Jun (Army Breaker) | Temple |
| Wealth (trine) | xu | Zi Wei + Tian Fu | Temple |
| Career (trine) | wu | Wu Qu (Military Melody) | Temple |
Reading: Tian Xiang governs coordination, a sense of propriety and rules; Lian Zhen brings emotion and principle. Together they make a personality that balances human feeling with systems and standards. With Zi Wei and Tian Fu in Wealth, spending leans steady, with an emphasis on accumulation and management. With Wu Qu in Career, work is decisive, execution-focused and professional. With Po Jun opposite, the outside environment often brings change and fresh starts.
Now add a jia (甲) birth year. The standard Four Transformations for the ten Heavenly Stems give: for jia, Lian Zhen → Lu, Po Jun → Quan, Wu Qu → Ke, Tai Yang → Ji. So Lu is in the Life Palace, Quan in Travel, Ke in Career — a combination leaning towards "going out, taking responsibility, accumulating expertise". Tai Yang sits in wei, which is exactly the Friends Palace, so Hua Ji lands in the sphere of relationships and colleagues: this is where the person is most invested and most likely to over-give, a place to set boundaries, rather than meaning "you will certainly be betrayed by friends".
This is a teaching example, not a verdict. Shift the birth hour by one and the whole twelve-palace layout moves, which is why an uncertain birth hour must be flagged first.
How palaces combine with the rest of the chart
Three layers sit on top of the palace map:
- Three Directions and Four Positions. Every palace must borrow information from its opposite and its two trine palaces. If the Spouse Palace itself is quiet but the opposite palace is turbulent, the relationship will not be quiet.
- Four Transformations (Si Hua). Birth-year transformations show where energy naturally flows (Lu), where it is pushed (Quan), where reputation and order matter (Ke) and where you cannot let go (Ji). Hua Ji does not equal disaster; it is the place you care about most and find hardest to stay neutral about.
- Auxiliary stars. Zuo Fu / You Bi (support), Wen Chang / Wen Qu (learning and expression), Lu Cun (resource), Qing Yang (fierceness, injury, sudden events), Tuo Luo (delay, dragging, repetition), Huo Xing / Ling Xing (impatience, sudden events) — these all belong to the "friction" group but differ in nature and cannot be lumped together. They change a palace's tone, but not its topic.
- Luck limits. Each ten-year Major Limit (Da Xian) re-sets the Life Palace, so the twelve palace labels rotate as a set. That is how a sense of time enters the reading.
Where schools differ, and common misreadings
The San He school reads a palace through star nature, brightness and the Three Directions and Four Positions, and treats birth-year transformations as the main dynamic layer. The Flying Stars school (Fei Xing) instead emphasises each palace's Palace Stem self-transformation and flown transformations, taking the "lines flown out" between palaces as the main axis; some Flying Stars systems also use the Friends Palace and Siblings Palace differently in financial readings. Both have lineage, which is better is still debated, and this course teaches the San He method.
Common misreadings:
- Treating a palace as a verdict. The Spouse Palace describes relationship patterns, not whether you will marry.
- Reading an empty palace as "emptiness". An empty palace is read by borrowing the opposite palace's stars, and often indicates flexibility and adaptability.
- Over-literal palace names. The Children Palace also covers creative work and juniors; the Health Palace covers constitution and stress tendencies, not diagnoses — see a doctor for physical problems.
- Ignoring brightness. The same star in Temple and in Fallen behaves very differently.
- Judging from one palace alone, the most common beginner error.
Key takeaways
- The twelve palaces are fixed topics; stars, brightness and the Four Transformations determine how each topic operates.
- Memorise the order: Life, Siblings, Spouse, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friends, Career, Property, Fortune, Parents.
- Any palace must be read together with its Three Directions and Four Positions (opposite plus two trines).
- Hua Ji means care and investment, not punishment; an empty palace means flexibility, not lack.
- Palaces describe tendencies and timing, not fixed outcomes; an uncertain birth hour changes the whole chart.
Questions & answers
Why is the Friends Palace also called the Servants Palace?
Classical texts use "Nu Pu" (servants), reflecting the social structure of the time. Modern practice uses the Friends Palace, covering friends, colleagues, subordinates and networks — the same palace, just updated vocabulary.
What if a palace has no major stars?
That is called an empty palace and it is very common. You read it by borrowing the major stars from the opposite palace, then referring to any auxiliary stars and transformations present. It usually indicates strong adaptability rather than "nothing there".
Which of the twelve palaces matters most?
The Life Palace sets the tone, but it must be read with Travel, Wealth and Career. If you are concerned with inner state and happiness, the Fortune Palace often carries no less information than the Life Palace.
Do the twelve palaces change over time?
The natal twelve palaces stay fixed, but each ten-year Major Limit re-sets the Life Palace, so the twelve labels rotate as a set. That is how Zi Wei handles time.
