How is a Chinese name scored?
A Chinese name is scored on its Kangxi stroke counts, which form the Five Grids (Heaven, Person, Earth, Outer, Total), and each grid is read against the 81 Spiritual Numbers. The elemental relationship between the Heaven, Person and Earth grids — the Three Talents — is then checked, and finally the characters' elements are compared with the favourable elements of the person's BaZi.
Why does a name need to match my BaZi?
A name works best when its elements supply what your birth chart is short of, so the numbers alone are not enough. Two names can score identically on stroke counts while only one of them feeds the element your chart actually needs.
Can an English name be analysed the same way?
Yes, but through a different system: each letter carries a number in the letter-energy (Chaldean) system, and the totals describe the name's character and how it lands on other people. It is then checked against your favourable elements the same way a Chinese name is.
