About this system

Divination systems answer a question about the present moment rather than reading a birth chart. NPCC covers two of the best known. Tarot is a deck of 78 cards; its 22 Major Arcana cards trace a journey from The Fool to The World through life’s big themes, and each card reads differently upright or reversed.

The I Ching (Yi Jing, 易經), or Book of Changes, is one of the oldest Chinese classics. It is built from 8 trigrams (Ba Gua, 八卦), three-line symbols for forces such as heaven, water and fire, which pair up into 64 hexagrams (Liu Shi Si Gua, 六十四卦). Casting coins gives you a hexagram, and any changing lines point to how the situation is moving. This glossary explains every Major Arcana card, every trigram and every hexagram in plain language, including how each tends to read in love, career and money questions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between tarot and the I Ching?

Tarot uses picture cards and reads the mood of a situation, while the I Ching uses six-line hexagrams and focuses on timing and how a situation is changing.

What is a trigram?

A trigram is a stack of three solid or broken lines. There are eight, and every hexagram is made of one trigram on top of another.

What are changing lines in the I Ching?

Changing lines are lines in your hexagram that are about to flip. They show which part of the situation is moving and lead to a second, future hexagram.

What does a reversed tarot card mean?

A reversed card usually shows the same energy as the upright card, but blocked, delayed, excessive or turned inward.
